Moisture-proof PE pipes in the south vs. frost-resistant PE pipes in the north: Same material, different formulas?

In the field of pipeline engineering, polyethylene (PE) pipes, thanks to their corrosion resistance and excellent toughness, have become the mainstay of modern piping systems. However, you may not know that seemingly identical PE pipes have completely different "missions" in the south and north. The reason behind this is the clever adjustment of the formula.

China's vast territory features significant climate differences between the north and south. The south experiences high temperatures, high humidity, and heavy annual rainfall, while the north experiences severe winters and deep permafrost. These starkly different environments place vastly different demands on the performance of PE pipes.

The humidity in the south can be described as "pervasive". In order to meet this challenge, the southern PE pipes have a hidden "moisture-proof code" in their formula. First of all, the anti-hydrolysis formula adds special stabilizers, which is like putting a strong "protective suit" on the molecular chain to effectively block the erosion of water. The content of hydrolysis stabilizer is usually 30-50% higher than that of the northern formula. Furthermore, a composite antimicrobial agent creates an anti-mold and antibacterial system, inhibiting microbial growth and preventing biofilm formation on the pipe's interior. Furthermore, enhanced interfacial bonding technology optimizes the formulation of pipe-fitting joints, ensuring tight, leak-proof joints even in hot and humid environments. According to tests conducted by a major PE pipe manufacturer, PE pipes using the southern formulation can extend their service life by 8-10 years in 95% humidity.

In northern winters, low temperatures are a major obstacle. Northern PE pipes feature "freeze-resistant technology" specifically designed for low-temperature environments. Low-temperature impact modification with elastomers imparts excellent toughness at low temperatures, maintaining excellent impact resistance even in extreme temperatures of -40°C. A unique molecular structure significantly reduces frost heave stress, enabling over 200 freeze-thaw cycles. To withstand the intense northern sun, a reinforced UV protection system containing anti-UV agents protects the pipe surface and delays aging. Monitoring at a water transmission project in Harbin revealed that PE pipes using a northern formulation maintained stable water flow even in extreme temperatures of -30°C.

Using northern-formulated PE pipes in the Yangtze River Basin will increase maintenance rates by 40% within three years due to their inability to adapt to humid environments. Conversely, using southern-formulated PE pipes in the north will lack frost resistance and lead to frequent pipe failure. Therefore, regional compatibility is crucial: moisture-resistant pipes should be selected in the south, while frost-resistant pipes should be used in the north.

With technological advancements, PE pipe formulations are constantly being innovated. In the future, whether it is the humidity in the south or the severe cold in the north, PE pipes will "escort" people's lives with more outstanding performance.
